Characteristics

Physical Characteristics

With its broad, soft leaf blades and rich green colour, Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo offers a premium appearance that is both lush and inviting. Its dense growth habit helps maintain a tidy, uniform surface that looks impressive whether freshly mown or left slightly longer.

Sir Walter spreads with surface runners that allow it to knit together into a solid turf base. This growth habit gives it the ability to cover over gaps and keep the lawn looking full and healthy. With the right care, it maintains an attractive and well-covered lawn surface season after season.

Durability

Known for its toughness, Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is well-suited to active family yards. It creates a strong, cushioned surface that can handle everyday use, while retaining its appealing appearance. Once established, it provides a resilient base for outdoor living and play.

Shade Tolerance

One of the key advantages of Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo is its ability to thrive in areas with limited direct sunlight. It performs strongly in partially shaded yards where other grasses may struggle, making it an excellent choice for gardens with trees, pergolas or high fences. This shade adaptability allows you to achieve a green, healthy lawn even in challenging light conditions.

Look and Feel

The standout feature of Sir Walter is its comfort underfoot. The broad, soft leaves create a velvety texture that feels gentle and pleasant to walk, sit, or play on. Combined with its rich green colour and dense coverage, it delivers a lawn that is both beautiful to look at and enjoyable to use.

Drought Tolerance

Sir Walter develops a deep root system that allows it to make the most of available moisture. With proper watering practices, it remains vibrant and attractive through the warmer months, holding its condition and colour for long periods. This makes it a dependable choice for maintaining a green lawn in summer.

Maintenance

Mowing

Sir Walter is best kept at a moderate mowing height, generally around 30–50mm, which helps maintain its density and rich colour. During the warmer months, regular mowing every 1–2 weeks will keep the lawn looking neat and healthy. In winter, growth naturally slows in South Australia’s cooler climate, so mowing can be reduced to once every 4–6 weeks. Always use sharp blades to achieve a clean cut and avoid scalping.

Watering

Once established, Sir Walter benefits from deep, infrequent watering rather than light, frequent watering. In South Australia’s dry summers, a thorough soak once or twice a week encourages deeper roots and better resilience. In winter, rainfall is usually sufficient, and additional watering is rarely required. Adjust watering based on seasonal conditions and local watering guidelines.

Fertilising

Sir Walter responds well to a balanced fertilising program. In South Australia, feeding in early spring helps kick-start new growth after winter. A second application in early summer supports the lawn through the hottest months, while an autumn feed strengthens it before cooler weather sets in. Choose a slow-release fertiliser formulated for buffalo lawns to maintain strong colour, healthy growth, and long-lasting results.

No. Santa Ana is a sterile, hybrid variety of grass that can only be grown vegetatively by runners or turf. While it does produce seed, the seed will not germinate due to its sterile nature. Even when growing production turf, special planting machines are used to plant runners rather than sowing seed.
